Ceramic Field Identification Manual
Agua Fria National Monument Project

About the Agua Fria Project | Jeddito Yellow Ware | Winslow Orange Ware | Roosevelt Red Ware
Ceramics Photo Gallery

We intend this ceramic field identification manual to help archaeologists and others identify the most frequently encountered decorated pottery wares and types found on fourteenth century pueblo sites of Agua Fria National Monument, central Arizona. Our work is based on Harold S. Colton's and Lyndon L. Hargrave's work at the Museum of Northern Arizona in the 1930s - 1950s, with significant infusions from the work of Harold Gladwin, and updates from recent research by Patrick Lyons, members of the Homol'ovi Research Program, and others, as noted in individual ware and type descriptions. We include photographs of type collections from the Museum of Northern Arizona and Northern Arizona University, and whole vessels from the Museum of Northern Arizona and other museums as noted in captions and credit lines.

The most frequent decorated pottery wares in the Agua Fria National Monument are:
Jeddito Yellow Ware, Winslow Orange Ware, Roosevelt Red Ware, also known as Salado Polychromes.

Other decorated wares that may be encountered in the monument include White Mountain Red Ware (see Carlson 1970, Hays-Gilpin & VanHartesveldt 1998).

Utility ware pottery in the monument includes locally-produced versions of Salt Red, plain and polished brown pottery, and phyllite schist-tempered Wingfield Plain.
