S. Colton Memorial Library - Collection Overview
Library Mission
The Harold S. Colton Library seeks to further the educational and
preservation goals of the Museum of Northern Arizona by collecting and
disseminating information on the land and peoples of the Colorado Plateau.
Collection Highlights
Books
The collection is strong in most subjects related to the Colorado Plateau.
Additionally, the library also houses copies of all MNA publications.
Special collections include Navajo and Hopi books, rare books, and a large
collection of dissertations relating to the Colorado Plateau.
Manuscripts
The Colton family documents are a major manuscript collection – family and
Museum history in the form of manuscripts and photographs are available.
Over 340 other manuscript collection also exist in the Archives which
includes published and unpublished manuscripts, voice recordings, and
photographs on regionally significant authors and subjects.
Periodicals
MNA has holdings of several hundred periodicals, including a small number
of current subscriptions. There are also older holdings of several
indigenous newspapers.
Separates and Subject Files
MNA's separates collection includes several thousand catalogued special
publications, gift pieces, journal reprints, and other unique items.
Subject files include bibliographies, artist files, and news clippings.
Photo Archives
Photo archives are also located in the library. The collection consists of
several thousand recent and historical images related to the Museum and
Colorado Plateau.
Maps
The library has a large collection of maps, including Arizona topographic,
GIS, Southwestern US, and world maps. There are several maps associated
with past exhibits and others of historical or cultural significance to
the Colorado Plateau. |
