Imagination and creativity will pay off when your mobiles, mosaics, kites, and planters are displayed in an art show on the last Friday. Educator: Clair Stoeckley June 18–22 and June 25–29, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. :: Register Online $225 Creative Clay Delve into the study of traditional clay forming techniques during this two-week introductory class. Experiment with ancient hand building and firing techniques, as well as contemporary clays and glazes. Explore prehistoric pottery forms, designs, basic techniques of pinch and coil construction for pots, firing, glazing, and decoration methods to produce embossed tiles, pots, and serving dishes. Educator: Ellen Colby June 18–22 and June 25–29, 1 p.m.–4 p.m. :: Register Online $230 Exploradores Españoles Listen to dynamic histories from guest speakers, make cultural crafts like papel picado, play Lotería, and learn Spanish. Hike to Basque tree carvings, and take a field trip to learn the Hispanic history of Flagstaff. All levels of Spanish speakers welcome. Educator: Michelle Galloway June 25–29, 9–4 p.m. :: Register Online $215 Flagstaff Time Machine Investigate northern Arizona in the ages of the dinosaurs, the Cretaceous Seaway, fast-forward to the Sinagua people, and end with downtown Flagstaff’s early beginnings. Put on your detective hat for scavenger hunts to Walnut Canyon, Riordan Mansion, and downtown to find clues about Flagstaff’s geological and cultural history. History will come alive through stories, outdoor exploration, crafts, and tours of MNA collections and exhibits. No class on July 4. Experiment with night vision, make a bat wing, and camouflage yourself, as you step into the surprising web of predators. No class on July 4. Prepare to get a little dirty and silly as you investigate the roles of plants, animals, and wildfires in the ponderosa pine forest through science experiments, games, nature hikes, and a field trip to Hart Prairie. Educator: Marci Wills July 9–13, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. :: Register Online $215 Tunes for the Trail Grab your canteen and get ready to explore the exciting world of songwriting, storytelling, and music traditions of the Southwest. Write your own cowboy songs and stories in your hand-crafted journal and create Wild West instruments from recycled materials. Family show on Friday. Make candles, pioneer toys, and other fun and useful crafts, just like in the old days, as well as sing pioneer songs and hear stories from Flagstaff’s history. Discover the unique environments of local lakes, rivers, and creeks through observation, games, experiments, and water play. You’ll be hands-deep in art as you create your own stamps, collages, paintings, pastel drawings, and prints. Learn how masters use color, shapes, lines, and texture to create masterpieces.
