Come along as we venture into the wild world of Flagstaff’s forests. Spend the week honing your observation skills, creating forest ecology experiments, exploring the landscape during nature hikes and games, and examining the important roles of plants, animals, and wildfires in the ponderosa pine forest ecosystem. Explore Flagstaff through the eyes of an author and illustrator, as you visit Sunset Crater, Wupatki, and downtown landmarks to develop your own characters and storylines. Develop and design your own book for debut during the annual fall Discovery exhibit. Collect, identify, and mount insects with MNA’s curator of ecology and conservation. Explorations and a Wednesday overnight on MNA’s 217-acre campus will immerse you in the wondrous world of insects. Get your hands dirty conducting soil ecology experiments, discover local plants and their uses, and learn how to make jewelry, shelters, and more from foraged materials. Construct a cob oven and bake a class feast on Friday. No class on July 4. Explore the 260 million year old sea that once covered much of northern Arizona and learn about the amazing creatures that swam here. Help MNA and NAU scientists in the field and lab to find and prepare shark fossils. Field trips to local fossil sites and Sea Life aquarium in Phoenix on Thursday. Learn about science and symmetry in art, music, and architecture. Explore the science of art conservation during a special behind the scenes tour of MNA Collections. Create your own pinhole camera, explore the region through a photographer’s lens, learn about famous photographers in the Southwest, and create photo collages. Discover the dynamic world of northern Arizona geology through experiments, creating a geologic time scale, investigating plate tectonics and sand dune formations, and searching for fossils. Walk into the center of a volcano that exploded long ago during a field trip to Red Mountain. Educator: Marci Wills July 30–August 3, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. :: Register Online $215 EcoArtist Have you ever wondered what to do with plastic grocery bags, broken dishes, and Styrofoam trays? Unleash your creative spirit as you transform these everyday objects into beautiful mosaics, mobiles, kites, planters, and prints. Learn about artists that work with recycled objects. Family art show on Friday. Mondays and Tuesdays, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. are on MNA’s campus. Wednesdays through Fridays are in the field (unless otherwise specified), camping, discovering, and having fun. Educators: Andy Yazzie and Sarah Collins June 18–22 Canyon Culture Challenge Hike and explore the largest prehistoric trading center in North America at Chaco Canyon. Wake up early to experience the Summer Solstice and traditional dances. Then travel to Canyon de Chelly, where an oasis full of rock art, cliff dwellings, and adventure awaits. (In the field Tuesday–Friday) $385 :: Register Online June 25–30 San Juan River Raft the mighty San Juan from Bluff, Utah to Mexican Hat. Learn about the geology, archaeology, flora, and fauna of southern Utah, and experience the sights and sounds of Canyon Country. (In the field Wednesday–Saturday) $650 :: Register Online July 16–20 Wild Canyons Canyoneer through the canyons of the Mogollon Rim, while studying water resources and riparian ecology. Camp, hike, swim, and explore beautiful desert canyons at Sycamore Canyon, West Clear Creek, and the West Fork of Oak Creek. Don’t forget your swimsuit! (In the field Wednesday–Friday) $335 :: Register Online July 30–August 3 Grand Canyon North Rim Tour Glen Canyon Dam, learn about the mighty Colorado River, and camp alongside Lake Powell. Then journey on to see one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World—the Grand Canyon! Hike the North Kaibab Trail, camp on the Canyon rim, learn about the flora and fauna, and if lucky, see a California condor!
