Summer Among the Peaks
Join MNA for SAP’s eleventh-year exploring educational topics with games, outdoor activities, hikes, art projects, experiments, and overnight camping adventures. Mondays and Tuesdays 9 a.m.–5 p.m. are on MNA’s campus. Wednesdays through Fridays are in the field camping, discovering and having fun. Project materials, snacks, and camping trip costs included. Registrations can be made by the week or for the entire summer.

Eight Summer Among the Peaks programs are available:
June 16–20 Wet and Wild
Get your feet wet studying riparian ecology/biology and water in the West at lower Clear Creek, Wet Beaver, and Slide Rock State Park. Camp, hike, swim, and explore in beautiful desert canyons. Don’t forget your swim suit!

June 23–28 San Juan River (6 days)
Raft the mighty San Juan from Bluff, Utah to Mexican Hat. Learn about
geology, archaeology, and the flora and fauna of southern Utah. During
the day look out for big horn sheep in their natural habitat and at night
listen to the sounds of canyon country.

July 7–11 Hopi Culture
Spend time learning about Hopi culture with local Native artists. Discuss  relevant topics about the environment, culture, and social issues. Learn about prehistoric and modern traditions and camp at the Hopi Mesas for  two nights.

July 14–18 Grand Canyon North Rim
Hike in one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Descend deep into the
Grand Canyon on the Kaibab Trail and learn about the flora and fauna of
this awesome country. Camp on the rim, attend evening ranger talks, and if lucky, see a California condor!

July 21–26 Bryce and Zion National Parks (6 days)
Hike, splash, swim, and explore Zion National Park, a crown jewel of the  National Park system. Spend a day amongst the hoodoos of Bryce National Park, a magical and surreal destination for the pioneer in all of us. Sit by an open campfire roasting marshmallows, telling stories, and sharing laughs. Feel the magic of giving back, by preserving the beauty along the trails of Zion through a service-learning project with the park.

July 28–August 1 Navajo  Culture
Start the week with a Navajo Taco Sale as we prepare for the upcoming  journey into Navajoland. Climb a butte in Dilcon, learn how to herd sheep, and eat traditional foods prepared over an open campfire. Hike and camp in the awe-inspiring Canyon De Chelly and end the week at the Chinle Flea Market.

August 4–8 Hike and Bike
Learn the skills to mountain bike in the Coconino National Forest. A local
biking expert teaches mountain bike maintenance, safety, and hints to
help both beginner and advanced riders. Test your skills and spend three
days riding the trails of the Mogollon Rim.

Dancin' through the Plateau (for ages 8-12)
June 16–20, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Explore movement and dance with inspirational music in our very own dance studio. Transform nature with crafts, painting, drawing and a week long mural. Daily Colorado Plateau reflections through hiking, nature explorations, and visiting MNA.

Fabric Fun
June 16–20, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
Using fiber art, get creative with paint, dye, and wet wool. Make colorful and useful objects from fabrics and felt—a tote bag, a stuffed toy, a felt pouch, and a wall hanging decorated with block prints, natural dyes, and yarn.

Adventures in Archaeology
Session 1: June 16–20,  9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Session 2: July 7–11, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Sift through Flagstaff’s prehistory while learning about excavation, data recording, and site interpretation techniques at Elden Pueblo. Enjoy traditional Native foods, games, crafts, and hiking while exploring significant archaeological sites in the Flagstaff area.

Hands in Clay
Session 1: June 16–20 and June 23–27, 1 p.m.–4 p.m.

Session 2: July 14–18 and July 21–25, 1 p.m.–4 p.m.

Pinch, coil, and build works of art using ancient hand building and firing techniques and contemporary clays and glazes. This two-week class explores prehistoric pottery forms and designs, explains the basic techniques of pinch and coil construction for pots, and produces musical shakers and embossed tiles. Week two investigates firing, glazing, and decoration methods to produce pendants, beads, and containers.

Leave No Trace!
June 23–27,  9 a.m.–4 p.m. (Thursday 9 a.m.–Friday 4 p.m.)
Spend the week learning minimum impact camping skills, navigating with a compass, first aid, the fundamentals of backcountry safety, and the art of outdoor cooking. The class concludes with an overnight at Hart Prairie.

The Urban Artist
June 23–27,  9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Take the everyday and create the extraordinary! Transform natural and recycled materials into art. Creative spirits go wild making mosaics and masks, molas and mobiles, piñatas and paper planes. Share projects with guests at a Friday artists’ reception.

The Art of Paper
July 7–11, 9 a.m.–12 p.m.
Create extraordinary art using the most ordinary material. Make mosaics, fold origami, create and play with puppets, and mold mobiles. Parents are invited to a Friday gallery show.

Canyon Collage

Drawn to Nature
July 28–August 1,  9 a.m.–1 p.m.
Mother Nature is an exciting artistic collaborator! Make cool and curious things from amazing natural materials, creating pine cone bird feeders, mobiles, rain sticks, and sculptures that highlight the riches of the natural world.

Detecting Wildlife
July 28–August 1, 9 a.m.1 p.m. (Tuesday field trip, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.)
Increase your awareness and understanding of wildlife by reading the landscape and honing your skills of observation. Learn to recognize signs of wildlife including reading tracks, identifying scat, and more. Record findings through photos, tracings, and casts, and monitor wildlife in the field, using a remote sensing camera. Tuesday field trip.

Pioneer Pastimes
July 28–August 1, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. (Tuesday field trip)
Through stories, songs, dances, and crafts, travel through time to explore how Flagstaff’s pioneers lived, worked, and played. Field trip to the Pioneer Museum included.

Me, Myself and Images of Nature
July 28–August 1, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
On day hikes into the Arizona landscape, make enduring impressions using a disposable camera. Create an original book using these photos, reflections and words, and memories of your life on the Colorado Plateau.

People and Plants
July 3, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Learn how plants have been used by Indigenous people of the Southwest and how they are still invaluable today. Nature walks, vegetable and native plant tie-dyes, and a field trip to Walnut Canyon are just the beginning.
