Harold S. Colton Memorial Library

Library Mission
The Harold S. Colton Library seeks to further the educational and preservation goals of the Museum of Northern Arizona by collecting and disseminating information on the land and peoples of the Colorado Plateau.

Collection Highlights

Books
The collection is strong in most subjects related to the Colorado Plateau. Additionally, the library houses copies of all MNA publications. Collection strengths include Navajo and Hopi books, rare books, and a large collection of dissertations relating to the Colorado Plateau.

Manuscripts
Over 340 manuscript collections exist in the Archives, which includes published and unpublished manuscripts, voice recordings, and photographs on regionally significant authors and subjects. These contain a substantial amount of culturally sensitive materials that may require special approval prior to access. The Colton family archives are a major manuscript collection that contains a wealth of information about the founding of the Museum and its early history.

Journals
The MNA journal collection is particularly strong in scholarly journals and newspapers published prior to 1985 and related to the Colorado Plateau.

Separates
MNA's separates collection includes 27,000 catalogued special publications, gift pieces, journal reprints, and other unique items. Subject files include bibliographies, artist files, and news clippings.

Photo Archives
The MNA Archival Photographs consist of approximately 250,000 negatives, glass plates, color transparencies, lantern slides, photographic prints, photogravures, and mounted photographic displays covering a time span from the late nineteenth century to the present.

Additional material documents Southwestern and Arizona history, and the ecology and environment of the Colorado Plateau.
