The minutes for the Executive Committee Minutes for July 15 and Finance and Investment Committee Minutes for June 1 were tabled for the next Board Meeting Consent Agenda. IV. Report from the Chair Susie Garretson also asked if each Board of Trustee has contributed $20 for the Board lunch and expense fund. A Memorandum of Understanding between MNA and Northern Arizona University was presented for board discussion. This document has been under development for a year, with Stefan Sommer serving as the principal liaison with NAU during the process. Discussion followed regarding the document. There were several recommended changes including a reference to the MOU’s with the Hopi Tribe which both NAU and MNA have recently passed. A few word changes for clarification recommended and several typographical errors were corrected. It was moved to approve the MNA/NAU MOU as amended, including referencing the MOU’s that the Hopi Tribe has with MNA & NAU. The motion was seconded and passed. V. Report from the Director Dr. Breunig mentioned that another find by Dr. Gillette, a Therizinosaur dinosaur, was found several years ago in the same formation as Plesiosaur. This dinosaur will be the subject of an exhibit planned for late 2006 or 2007. The Utah Museum of Natural History is the repository for the Therizinosaur and is working with MNA on the exhibit. The Navajo-Hopi Observer had a great article on the Navajo Festival. Attendance for the festival increased 33% over last year. The Hopi Show had record breaking attendance also, up 30%. We received a nice letter from the Governor of Arizona expressing appreciation for the Hopi Show which she attended on the final day. The staff, in particular Diane Rechel, worked hard to make the all of the artists feel welcome and comfortable. Especially successful was the Heritage Insights Program, funded by the Arizona Humanities Council, which provided a new level of cultural programming. The old Hopi Mural Project, now called the Hopi Iconography Project, is continuing to move forward with Dr. Kelley Hayes-Gilpin serving as the guest curator. Dr. Breunig hosted an all day meeting regarding the MNA Collections Center with National Park Services representatives, to discuss NPS involvement in the development of the new facility. Richard Cronberger, an NPS architect and repository expert is working with James Roberts on the specifications for the new facility. The Flagstaff Area Monuments of the NPS has received approval for funding of an NPS component in their 2009 fiscal year budget. Coconino County gave MNA a $10,000 grant for security upgrades. MNA received a two-year grant for $160,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to hire a registrar and an assistant to prepare a collections inventory in advance of the move to a new Collection Center. MNA also received a one-year NAGPRA grant for $75,000 from the National Park Service. Gloria Lomahaftewa has been hired as our new NAGPRA Specialist. Gloria has worked in the same capacity at the Heard Museum. Arizona Commission of the Arts awarded MNA a $44,000 grant for basic aid. We received a $24,000 basic aid grant from the Flagstaff Cultural Partners. MNA has applied to the Forest Highlands Foundation through the Flagstaff Community Foundation for a grant to fund scholarships for the Discovery Program for next year. Representatives of the Forest Highlands Foundation did a tour of the Discovery Program earlier this week and appeared enthusiastic about the program. Muses Report VI. Report from the Finance and
